The Gospel of John. Chs. 6-10
CHAPTER 6 Jesus feeds the five thousand 1Later Jesus travelled to the other side of the sea of Galilee, (the Romans call it the sea of Tiberias).2Huge crowds followed him, because of the many healings he performed.3Jesus went up into the mountain, and sat with his disciples.4It was the feast of passover.5When Jesus saw the amount of people that had followed him, he said to Philip, Where can we buy bread, to feed these people?6However, Jesus was only saying this to test Philip: for he knew what he was going to do.7Philip replied, It would take six months wages to buy just a morsel for each of them.8 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Jesus,9Here is a lad, with five barley loaves, and two fishes: but how far could that go?10Jesus said, Tell the people to sit down. There was about five thousand men there, and they sat down on the grass. 11Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and handed them out. He did the same with the fish, until he had given them all out. 12And when the people had eaten as much as they wanted, he said to his disciples, Gather up left-overs so that nothing is wasted.13 The left-overs filled twelve baskets.14When the people saw this sign they declared: This is indeed the prophet promised to us. 15However, Jesus discerned that they were about to make him king by force. So he headed for the hills by himself. Jesus walks on water 16That evening his disciples tavelled to the sea,17 got into a boat, and set out for Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus still hadn't returned to them.18Now a storm arose, and the sea became rough. 19After rowing for about three to four miles they were startled to see Jesus walking towards them on the water.20But he said to them, Don't be afraid It is I.21 So they let him on board and immediately they arrived at their destination. 22The next day, the crowds on the other shore saw only one other small boat and knew that Jesus had not left with his disciples. 23Even still boats continued to arrive from Tiberius to the place where they ate bread, after the Lord had given thanks.24when they saw that neither Jesus, or his disciples were there, they got back into the boats, and set out for Capernaum, to find him. Jesus the bread of life 25And when they found him on the other side of the sea, they asked him, Rabbi, when did you get here?26Jesus said to them, In all truth, I say to you, You're not seeking me, because you saw signs, but because you had your fill of bread.27 Don't waste your energy on perishable food. But the Son of man gives the food which lasts for life without end. For God the Father, has approved him. 28They asked him, How do we work for God?29 Jesus answered them, The work of God is that you believe in the one he sent.30They challenged him, What sign, can you show us, so we may believe you? What work can you do? 31Our fathers ate the manna in the desert, as it is written: He gave them bread from heaven to eat.32Jesus replied, In all truth, I say to you, It wasn't Moses that gave you the bread from heaven. But my Father gave you the true bread from heaven. 33For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven, and gave life to the world.34They answered him, Master, give us this bread forever more.35Jesus said to them. I am the bread of life. He who comes to me shall never hunger, and he who believes in me shall never thirst.36But I told you that, and you've already seen me demonstrate it, and still you don't believe.37All those the Father gave me shall come to me, and I will never turn them away.38For I came from heaven not to do my own bidding but to serve the will of him that sent me sent me. 39And this is his will, that I should keep everything he has given me, and raise it up on the last day. 40This is the will of my Father, that every one that hears and believes the Son, should have eternal life; and I will raise them up on the last day. 41The Jews complained among themselves, because he said, I am the bread that comes from heaven.42They said, Isn't this Jesus bar Joseph? Don't we know his father and mother? How can he say, I come from heaven?43Jesus said to them, Stop murmuring among yourselves.44No one can come to me, unless the Father draws him, and I will raise him up in the last day. 45It is written in the prophets, And they shall all be taught by God. Every one that listens to the Father, comes to me. 46Not that any one has seen the Father, except the one from God: He has seen the Father. 47In all truth, I say to you, anyone who believes has eternal life.48I am the bread of life.49 Your fathers ate manna in the desert, and they died.50This is the bread which comes from heaven, anyone who eats this bread will not die.51 I am the living bread from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread, shall live for ever. The bread I give, for the life of the world, is my flesh.52The Jews argued with one another, How can this man give us his flesh to eat? 53So Jesus said to them, In all truth I say to you, Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you will not live.54Ayone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life: and I will raise him up at the last day. 55For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me, and I in him.57 As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father; so whoever eats me, shall also live because of me.58 This is the bread from heaven: not like the fathers ate, who died. Anyone who eats this bread shall live for ever.59This all happened in the synagogue, in Capernaum. Many desert Jesus 60Many of his disciples, when they heard this, said, This is an impossible teaching to accept?61 But Jesus who knew that his disciples were complaining, said to them, Will you fall away because of this?62 What if you saw the Son of man ascending to heaven? 63It is the spirit that gives life; not the the flesh. The words I have spoken are spirit: They are life.64However, some of you don't believe. Jesus knew from the beginning the ones who would not believe. He also knew who would betray him.65 So he said, For this reason I have said to you, that no one can come to me, unless the Father allows him.66At this many fell away, and left him.67 So Jesus said to the twelve, Are you going away too?68 Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the message of eternal life.69 And we know that you are the Holy One of God.70Jesus answered, I chose you twelve, and yet one of you is a devil?71The one he spoke of was Judas the son of Simon Iscariot, the traitor. CHAPTER 7 Jesus in Jerusalem 1 And this Jesus went to Galilee. He would not stay in Judaea, because the Jews were trying to kill him.2Now it was the Jewish feast of tabernacles.3So his brothers said to him, leave here for Judaea, so your disciples may see your works which you do.4For no one does things in secret, if he waants to be famous. If you are doing these things, show yourself to the world.5For even his family did not believe in him. 6Jesus therefore said to them, My time hasn't come yet, but your time is anytime. 7The world cannot hate you; but it hates me, because I testify that its works are evil.8Go you up to the feast: I go not up to this feast; because my time is not yet fulfilled.9And having said this Jesus stayed in Galilee.10But when his brothers went up to the feast, he also went up, not publicly, but in secret.
