The Lord's Prayer

Father in heaven,

Think about this. What does it mean for me to call God Father?
How do I understand the term?
Does it remind me of my earthly father, if so does that colour my understanding of my heavenly Father?
What is the difference between heavenly and earthly?
If God is my father who am I, and what does that mean to me?
How do I relate to others who call God their Father?

Your name is Holy.

What is the significance of the word 'name'. Is it simply an appellation (Mr. God), or a designation (It says something about God)?
What is God's name?
Do we share the same family name as God? How does that impact our relationship with Him and others?
What does holy mean (Are you sure)?
What is Jesus saying about God?

10Your Kingdom come.

What is the Kingdom?
Where is it?
How do we seek it?
How does it come?

Your will be done What is God's will:

  • For me
  • For my family
  • For my church
  • For my friends and colleagues
  • For my country
  • For my government
  • For the world

on earth, as it is in heaven.

What is done differently in heaven, that isn't done here on the earth?
What's wrong with this world?

11Give us today, the bread of the coming day.

Why bread?
What is the coming day? Is it just today? Is it the day when Christ returns?
What will happen then? How does that impact today?
Is today's bread a fortaste of that day's bread? If so how does it differ?

12Forgive us our sins

This is plural. I ask Forgiveness
  • For me
  • For my family
  • For my church
  • For my friends and colleagues
  • For my country
  • For my government
  • For the world

just as we forgive those who sin against us.

Now think of those:
  • Who have injured you.
  • Who have insulted you.
  • Who have robbed you.
  • Who have maligned or slandered you.
  • Who have abused you.
  • Who have despised you.
  • Who are killing you.
Place them before the Father and declare out loud as many times as you feel necesary until you believe it in your heart:

In Jesus' Name I forgive them.

13 Do not let temptation overwhelm us,
but deliver us from the evil one.

How do I be good?
Is it just up to me?
How does the Holy Spirit help me?

14 “If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you.
15 But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive you.

This line speaks for itself.
Make sure you mean what you're saying.
Spend some time thinking about what you've just said.

Now put it into practice!
